Six tips for improving your mental health today

Your mental health is important.

Did you hear that?

Your mental health is important.

It absolutely needs to be a priority for you to take care of your mental health if you want to have a more positive outlook on yourself and life in general. However, we often overlook our own mental health because we don’t think about it or are too busy with work, school or family.

If you have been neglecting your mental health, we want you to stop whatever you’re doing now and take a moment to reflect on six tips you can use right away to start improving your mental health.

Six tips for improving your mental health

  1. Remember that you are valuable — Constantly being hard on yourself and criticizing every small mistake you make can lead to you losing value and respect for yourself. Treat yourself with the patience and kindness you would expect from others. Respect yourself, and don’t criticize yourself for every small thing.
  2. Surround yourself with positive people — Negative or toxic people can have an effect on your own outlook. If you’re surrounded by negative people, find yourself a new group of friends instead who are positive and supportive or each other and you.
  3. Develop healthy coping mechanisms — Unhealthy ways of dealing with stress can temporarily mask the stress but ultimately lead to other issues. For example, drinking to deal with stress only hides the pain for a little bit and can lead to a serious drinking problem. Instead, develop healthy coping mechanisms, such as medication, journaling, playing music or exercising.
  4. Be realistic — Do not expect one medication session to magically fix your problems. Just like building the strength of your biceps, building stronger mental health takes a lot of time and effort, but you’ll get there eventually if you do not give up.
  5. Improve your physical health — Physical exercise helps take your mind off what is causing stress. It also releases chemicals in your body that help you feel calmer and more relaxed.
  6. Give yourself a break — Often, one of the reasons we have stress is that we don’t give ourselves a break or create time for ourselves. While it’s important to take responsibility for your duties, it is not worth sacrificing every bit of yourself for if you do not have even a few hours to relax or enjoy a personal activity that helps you feel restored.
