Who ever said certainty is part of faith?

May 7, 2021 | Relevant Life

Part of many Christians’ faiths these days is finding the answers to everything. Which is strange, because many of these same Christians will be the first to say “Oh, well I don’t have all the answers because who could know …” and then proceed to tell you the answers to everything and why science is wrong, etc., etc.

Look, we think it’s great to look for answers to life’s many mysteries and truths. However, our faith doesn’t demand answers. It never demanded certainty. It merely demands itself.

Faith flourishes in uncertainty

“The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It’s our handle on what we can’t see. The act of faith is what distinguished our ancestors, set them above the crowd.”

  • Hebrews 11:1-2 (MSG)

As the writer of the letter to the Hebrews makes clear, faith is a fundamental trust in God. That’s it. It’s not finding the true remnants of Noah’s Ark in this mountain, wait that mountain, no, it’s this other mountain. It’s not fighting against all reason and logic to claim the world is 6,000 years old (a claim never made directly in the Bible, by the way). It’s not about finding answers. It’s about accepting God as The Answer and following His teaching.

We can make things simple for ourselves by truly trusting what Jesus means when He said everything in the law hangs on our ability to do two things: to love God and to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. By doing these two things, the other laws are fulfilled. We don’t need to worry about every iota of the law or about having every answer to everything. We simply need to have faith in God, love Him and love others. This way, the church can grow and the love of God can touch the hearts of more people around the world.
