Why dealing with depression doesn’t need to be the center of your life

Mar 1, 2021 | Mental Health

Depression can be difficult to explain. It doesn’t affect everyone in the same way. Some may develop signs of depression quickly and in a recognizable way. Others may be affected by depression so slowly that they and those around them don’t really notice it until it builds up to a breaking point.

Regardless of how depression affects you, it is important that you take it seriously and seek help. For years, depression has been subject to stigma, but these days, more and more people are seeing it for what it is. There are plenty of resources that can provide help, including here at Unfiltered Radio.

We speak often about recognizing depression and taking it seriously, but we also want to take a moment to remind you that if you have depression, it is a condition that is affecting you; it does not define who you are.

Dealing with depression is not the center of your life

If you have been diagnosed with depression, you probably spend time with clinical professionals for treatment and may be prescribed some medication too. All of this changes your life a bit, but it should not redefine your life.

We say this because it can be easy to start letting yourself feel that everything in your life revolves around your condition and treatment. However, this is only a part of your life. Take the time to focus on other things you enjoy, such as hobbies or improving your physical fitness.

The point is, when you’re dealing with depression, it is just as important to focus on making opportunities to enjoy life as much as it is to take your treatment seriously. Look, there is no cookie-cutter solution to depression, but by keeping this in mind, you may be able to help yourself find your identity in you again and not in your condition.
